Hanatabi
a touken ranbu fanzine
What is “Hanatabi”?
Hanatabi (花旅 or “Flower Voyage”) is a Touken Ranbu fan project. The goal is to produce a major arcana tarot deck with a hanakotoba (Japanese flower language) theme. This will be a for-profit project. The mods behind the project are:
Keii - Twitter
Noodle - Twitter
Noah - Twitter
Who will be participating?
We plan on having one artist for each major arcana for a total of 22 artists. Artists will be allowed to apply via a Google Form during the application period and the necessary 22 artists will be chosen impartially by the mods in charge.
What are we looking for in artists?
There are three major components we will be evaluating when picking artists: human anatomy, composition, and ability to draw flora. Backgrounds are not required, but we would prefer more than a white/transparent background. Application judging aside, we need our artists to be fully available for this project. This means if you notice any schedule conflicts with other projects, cons, or real life please consider if you will be able to complete and turn in your work in a timely manner. Please also be capable of being reached. Having participants turn up silent on important dates is very stressful and harms the project as well.
How will artists know what they’re going to draw?
Tarot, flower, and sword combinations are pre-decided for this project so artists will be able to select which cards they are willing to draw during the application process. This will not affect judging for applications and will only be used to help decide who will draw what card later on.
How will participants be compensated?
As this is a for-profit project, every participant will receive a cut of the net profit. Mods will receive 5% each for their work. This leaves 85% for the 22 artists so, per math, that will be 3.86% per artist. Merch artists will receive an increased cut of premium bundle sales still under calculation depending on what merch will come with the zines.
All participants will also receive a physical copy and merch bundle as thanks! Participants will also be able to order extra copies at production cost.
How much will the zine cost?
With a 22 piece deck, the tarot cards will have a $22 base price with more expensive merch bundles. The mod in charge of shipping is US-based so shipping within and from the US will be estimated based on USPS rates. Estimated US shipping is $6 and estimated international shipping ranges from $10 to $20 depending on country.
What will happen with my art?
Besides being used in the project, all rights to the art remains with the artist and we have no intent of infringing upon that. We only ask that previews and progress of pieces do not be shared until permission is given by the mods. Final pieces may only be posted after shipping concludes.
